Expectant mother dies due to 'negligence'
An expectant young woman yesterday died after around seven hours into her admission to Panchagarh sadar hospital, due to alleged negligence of an on-duty doctor.
Agitating relatives of the woman and local people, following her death, besieged the hospital and assaulted a staffer. Police, however, brought the situation under control.
Hasina Begum, 18, wife of Mozahar Hossain of Jatanpukuri village of Panchagarh sadar upazila, was admitted to the hospital with birth pain around 3:50am yesterday.
Unattended for hours, Hasina was visited by Dr Baharam Ali, the resident medical officer, around 11:00am. The doctor advised two injections including Moxadil and Sedil.
As soon as a nurse injected her the medicines, Hasina fell unconscious.
Sensing something wrong, the doctor ordered shifting the patient to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital. But Hasina died soon afterwards.
Hasina's husband Mozahar Hossain said they called doctors again and again, but no doctor visted her in 7-8 hours after her admission.
"I also went to Dr Baharam Ali's house three times but he did not respond," he said.
Contacted, Dr Baharam said the patient was admitted with eclampsia, which according Wikipedia, is "an acute and life-threatening complication of pregnancy".
"I attended the patient at about 11:00am and advised two injections, but she died later", he said.
