The authorities of New Heera Jewellers yesterday filed a case against six unnamed burglars for looting 1166 tolas of gold from the shop on Friday. Mosharraf Hossain Sharif, brother-in-law of the shop owner Ali Akbar Khan, lodged the case with Gulshan Police Station. “I think the shop was robbed in a pre-planned way as the burglars looted the gold jewellery very promptly,” Mosharraf told The Daily Star. He also suspected the gang might have got assistance from the employees of the shop or market as they left the scene safely and swiftly. A band of six armed robbers looted jewellery from the outlet on the ground floor of Iqbal Centre on Kamal Ataturk Avenue in the capital's Banani area. The gang held four shop staff at gunpoint and robbed the jewellery after breaking showcases around 2:00pm. Police have picked up eight persons for interrogation including five employees of the shop and three security guards of the market, said Inspector Masud Karim, investigation officer of the case. Of the detained staff, four were present during the robbery while the other was on leave, he noted adding, one of them sustained injury to his leg. Police were raiding several places for the robbers. According to Mosharraf Hossain, the shop owner has another outlet at Baitul Mukarram market. His two daughters have been running the business since he fell sick a few years ago. The current market value of the looted jewellery is over Tk 5 crore, said Dewan Aminul Islam Shahin, general secretary of Bangladesh Jewellers' Samity. He expressed concern over the burglary incident in broad daylight claiming successive robberies in recent time pose threat to jewellery business. Aminul urged the government to strengthen the security of jewellery shops.
