Jahanara Imam's 17th anniversary of death today

Today is the 17th death anniversary of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam who lost her son Rumi in the liberation war and pioneered the movement against war criminals of 1971. On the occasion, different organisations will hold programmes to recall her. Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, founded by Jahanara Imam in 1992, will organise a discussion and "Jahanara Imam memorial speech" at the city's WVA auditorium in Dhanmondi at 4:00pm. The committee will also give away "Jahanara Imam Memorial Medal" to Prof Salahuddin Ahmed and Prof Anupam Sen and two organisations -- Bangladesh Adivasi Forum and Samprodaikota and Jangibad Birodhi Mancha -- at the programme. Meanwhile Bangladesh Chhatra Federation will hold a discussion "Jahanara Imam, trial of war criminals, and the politics of national sovereignty" on Dhaka University campus. Jahanara Imam, who authored "Ekatturer Dinguli" (the days of '71), passed away due to cancer at a US hospital on this day in 1994. BSS adds: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday paid rich tribute to Jahanara Imam on the occasion of her 17th death anniversary. In a message, she recalled the role of Jahanara Imam, mother of 1971 martyr Rumi, in inspiring her valiant son and his fellow freedom fighter friends in various ways during the the War of Liberation. “Jahanara Imam described her experiences about the Liberation War in her book “Ekatturer Dinguli”, which is touching,” said Hasina. The contribution of Shaheed Janani in the liberation war and against the evil communal forces is unforgettable, the prime minister said, adding that the Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee had revitalised the spirit of the liberation war once again in the country, said an official handout. She said her government is determined to establish the spirit of the War of Liberation, by evaluating the freedom fighters, upholding the real history and bringing the 1971 war criminals to book. She also expressed her determination to hold the trial of the war criminals. She said her government has already taken initiatives to start trial of the war criminals.
