Suicide bid after killing her baby
A female domestic help tried to commit suicide after allegedly killing her three-year-old daughter with a scarf at a house in the city's Gulshan yesterday.
Hamida Begum, 27, of Jhikargachha in Jessore was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 10:30pm.
The doctors at DMCH said Hamida has become mentally unsound after she tried to kill herself with the same scarf after the death of her daughter Suraiya. Both Hamida and her child were found lying unconscious on the floor at around 8:00pm, said employer Dr Fatema Meem.
Dr Meem, physician of a private hospital, used to live in her Gulshan residence at Road 121 along with the housemaid as her father customs official Shahjahan Kabir went to Canada to visit his expatriate wife Dr Sharifa Marry.
Driver Mohammad Jewel told The Daily Star at DMCH that his employer Dr Meem first found Hamida and her baby lying on the floor when she unlocked the door returning from Uttara.
Jewel said they rushed the mother and the baby to a local private hospital from where they were shifted to DMCH where the doctors declared Suraiya dead. Jewel said the incident might have taken place between 3:00pm and 8:00pm.
Dr Meem said Hamida had been working in her house for the last six months along with her child. Hamida was sick for the last three days, she added.
