Anarchy if polls not held under caretaker govt

Warns Khandker Mahbub

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Khandker Mahbub Hossain yesterday said next parliamentary election must be held under a nonpartisan caretaker government, whatever its name may be. The country would plunge into anarchy if the next election is not held under such a neutral government, he said. He was speaking at a press conference organised by SCBA at its south hall in the city marking United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Mahbub, also a member of BNP chairperson's advisory council, said the opposition leaders and activists are being tortured after being taken on remand in connection with cases falsely accusing them. Arafat Rahman Koko, younger son of BNP chairperson, was convicted and sentenced unlawfully and the government is politically using the judiciary to harass the opposition, he said. Mahbub said a time will come when democracy will be restored, the judiciary will be independent and the victimised people including Arafat will be served justice. Pro-BNP lawyers Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Zainul Abedin and Fahima Nasrin Munni were present at the conference.
