'Try Rumana's husband'

Staff Correspondent
Speakers at a human chain yesterday demanded quick trial and exemplary punishment of Hasan Sayeed Sumon, who brutally tortured and blinded his wife Rumana Manzur, a teacher of Dhaka University. Women Cell of Bangladesh Communist Party (CPM) led by its Convener Laxmi Chakrabarty organised the human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club in the city, says a press release. They said crimes like torture on women would increase if the accused do not get exemplary punishment and rights of women are not established in society. CPM Central Committee member Ruhin Hossain Prince, Mahbub Alam and Luna Noor were present at the programme. Rumana, an assistant professor of Department of International Relations, lost her eyesight as Sumon pushed his fingers into her eyes on June 5.
