Save 2nd channel of Buriganga

Staff Correspondent
Save the Environment Movement and some organisations of Old Dhaka yesterday demanded immediate effective measures to save the second channel of Buriganga river from encroachment and pollution. The organisations' leaders at a rally on Nababganj Balughat Beribadh in the city said there was a flowing channel of Buriganga in 1764 which divided from Bailsa into two parts in 1858, one eastward and the other westward. The channel's connection with Bangshi and Dhaleswari slowly got disconnected, reducing its water flow while encroachment on the channel continued, they said. The movement General Secretary Hafizur Rahman Mayna, Councilor of ward number 59 Humayun Kabir, Abul Hasnath, Riaz Uddin, Golam Mohammad Edu and Borhan Bulbul addressed the rally.
