Why this disparity?
The government sponsored national saving certificate has been a popular source of investment for all sections of people, especially the retired persons who mainly hail from middle and lower income groups due to getting a better dividend against their deposits.
However, owing to present government's whimsical decision to cut the dividend on the saving certificates, many had withdrawn their money and opt to invest in the share market for getting better profit. But unfortunately, taking advantage of their ignorance, some money hungry looters very tactfully defrauded millions of these marginal investors of their lifetime savings and made them virtually paupers.
As for the saving certificates, what is really disturbing is that the government applies double standards! For example, a government servant gets much higher percentage of dividends than a non government staff. A government staff gets Tk. 3125/- against a deposit of Tk. 1 Lakh every three months. A non government staff gets only Tk. 2250/- for the same amount. May we seek the finance ministry's rationale and clarifications behind this disparity? We think in a democratic country everyone should be treated equally.
