Eleven green and civil society organisations yesterday urged the government not to do business with natural water under the banner of Public Private Partnership (PPP). People will be deprived of pure drinking water if private organisations are given the responsibility to collect and supply water, said speakers at a sit-in in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University. The protesters said the government should not consider water a source of revenue and a commodity to protect interest and security of people. They also demanded of the government to declare water as a basic human need through formation of policies and law. Paribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) General Secretary Dr Halim Dad Khan said people should stand against the conspiracy of commercialisation of water by any means. Mihir Biswas, coordinator of Buriganga Bachao Andolon, said steps should be taken quickly to recover the contaminated water bodies soon. Encroaching on water bodies must stop, he added. Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa) executive member Mahidul Haque Khan presided over the protest programme addressed by Pratyasha General Secretary Helal Ahmed, NDF Chairman Ibnul Syed Rana, and Green Mind Chairman Amir Hasan among others.
