MoU to construct Ctg city ring road signed
The Chittagong Development Authority yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an engineering consultant company for construction of Patenga-Sagarika 14.7km ring road in the port city.
Abdus Salam, chairman of the CDA; and Mohiuddin Mahmud, regional manger of South Asia Group SMEC Australia; signed the MoU at hotel The Peninsula Chittagong.
An estimated cost of Tk 856.28 crore was approved for the project while Jica will provide Tk 681.12 crore and the government about Tk 175.18 crore.
Out of the amount, Tk 103 crore will be spent for consultancy.
Dainichi Japan and ACE Bangladesh will operate as the sub-consultants in the Chittagong City Outer Ring Road project, being implemented by the CDA with funds from the government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
The project has been taken to develop Chittagong as a modern industrial city with best communication and transportation facilities.
Primary and Mass Education Minister Afsarul Ameen, who was present as the chief guest at the signing ceremony, said the ring road will protect Chittagong city from natural disasters like cyclonic surge and tsunami, reduce traffic congestion, and ease transport communication between Dhaka and Chittagong city.
"The approved project will promote private sectors for establishing new industries and tourism through foreign investment", added the minister.
The CDA chairman said the coastal road not only would improve traffic situation in the port city, but also would protect it from tropical flood and cyclone through strengthening the modern coastal embankment.
The project undertaken in January 2011 will be completed in December 2014, he said.
CDA Chief Engineer Ikbal Hossain Mojumder, CDA Secretary Kamal Reza, consultant representative Dr Golam Mostafa, CDA board members Jahirul Alam Dobhash and Yunuch Moni Chowdhury, and CDA town planner Md Jahir Ahmed also spoke.
