Leave practice of leaving court after lunch
CJ asks lower court judges
Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain yesterday said there are allegations against a number of lower court judges of not attending court proceedings after lunch break and this practice is “totally unacceptable”.
“It is worse when it comes to district judges. It has become an unwritten practice,” he said at a reception programme for him organised in the city's Judiciary Administration Training Institute.
Bangladesh Women Judges Association organised the programme with its President Jesmin Anwar in the chair.
“You (the judges) should be conscious about the matter and not waste the court's time,” he added.
He said he had information that judges leave the area of their posting during the weekends and so can not think over the cases at hand. He urged them to avoid this practice for the sake of justice and maintaining discipline of the judiciary.
He said though the judiciary was seperated from the executive, it is still to be provided the required logistics and manpower.
“You might face problems in serving your duties. But you are judges. You have to perform your assigned duties properly so that litigants can get justice and nothing can hinder the trial process,” he said.
He said female judges face a lot of problems like staying away from their family when posted in a different region, but male judges face the same problems too.
“There is no radical solution. The problems would be solved gradually and initiatives in this regard have already begun,” he said, urging the judges to uphold justice above all sorts of limitations.
He also emphasised on good relations between lawyers and judges to ensure justice.
Addressing the programme, Justice SK Sinha, chairman of Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission, said they are considering initiating a written test for the promotion of judges.
Justices of the Appellate and High Court Division also spoke at the programme.
