English newspaper circulation

Circulation of a newspaper means the total number of copies of that newspaper distributed to the subscribers and vendors in a day while readership of a newspaper is the number of readers read a particular newspaper either by buying or sharing it with someone or reading it in newspaper stand, library, etc. Usually the number of readers of a newspaper is greater than its circulation. Recently, while I was visiting Sylhet I was rather surprised to get an idea about the circulation and readership of our national English newspapers in the district. I think that both circulation and readership of English newspapers are not so encouraging. As we know and frequently say that reading of English newspapers can effectively contribute in the learning of English language but outside Dhaka both circulation and readership of English newspapers are very poor. It is much difficult to get English dailies in most of the districts. For instance, on June 25 last while on a personal visit to Sylhet I was informed that none of the English dailies had reached Sylhet till noon. I think the newspaper authorities should take necessary measures to make newspapers available in all the divisional and district towns. At the same time, they can also conduct a survey on the distribution and readership of English newspapers.
