2 cloth godowns burnt to ashes
Two godowns of old cloths were gutted in a fire in the port city's commercial hub of Chaktai Thursday night, causing an estimated damage of over Tk 1 crore.
About 80 fire fighters from five stations doused the blaze, which erupted around 9:00pm, after 14 hours of efforts.
Fire officials said the fire might have originated from an electric short circuit and was intensified by chemical stored in the two godowns -- Victory Cabin and Glory Trading located near new Karnaphuli bridge -- for preservation of the cloths.
Assistant Deputy Director (ADD) of Fire Brigade Subhash Chandra Debnath said that as they could not contact the godowns' owners, it was difficult to exactly gauge the extent of damage. The rough estimate might stand at over Tk 1 crore, he said.
