Punitive measures in offing for road crash
Says communications minister
The government will beef up punitive measures against drivers responsible for road accidents and violating traffic rules while the vehicle owners will also be punished for road accident related crimes.
Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain said this while addressing the inaugural day of a workshop titled “Enhancement of capacity and awareness of drivers” yesterday.
Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Board (DTCB) organised the workshop at its conference room in the city.
"We have proposed amending the existing motor vehicle act in this regard," said the minister, adding that the amendment's draft was sent to the law ministry and would hopefully be passed in parliament by this year.
The government took initiatives to ease the procedure for issuing driving licenses. “The whole procedure will be digitised,” he said.
Drivers should refrain from reckless driving and abide by all the traffic rules and signs. "You should never take alcohol before driving," he said.
He also stressed the need for launching a massive campaign to make general people, drivers and vehicle owners aware about the causes and consequences of road accidents.
DTCB organised the workshop under a project titled “Clean Air and Sustainable Environment”. A total of 500 drivers will be trained under this project in different phases.
Initially, 40 drivers will be trained in the first batch, said the project Director Anisur Rahman.
