Order to Tarique, 11 Others
Court asks to publish ad in two dailies
A Dhaka court yesterday asked the authorities concerned to publish an advertisement in two national Bangla dailies asking BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and 11 others to appear before it within seven days in connection with the August 21 grenade attack.
It said if they fail to comply with the order, the trial against them would continue in their absence.
Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Keshob Roy Chowdhury passed the order after different police stations submitted reports on execution of arrest warrants issued earlier against the 12.
The order was passed in the case filed for killing 24 Awami League leaders and workers in the gruesome attack on an AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004.
The other fugitives are BNP lawmaker Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, former political secretary to former prime minister Khaleda Zia, Harris Chowdhury, former director general of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) Maj Gen (retd) ATM Amin, former DGFI officer Lt Col (sacked) Saiful Islam Joarder, former deputy commissioner (DC-East) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Obaidur Rahman, former DC-DMP (South) Khan Sayeed Hassan, owner of Hanif Paribahan Mohammad Hanif and three leaders of outlawed Harkat ul Jihad al Islami (Huji) Omar Abu Humayra alias Pir Saheb Baba, Hafez Maulana Yahiya Babu alias Ratul Babu and Mufti Abdul Hye.
A metropolitan magistrate's court issued arrest warrants against 12 accused in the murder case on July 3 after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted supplementary charge sheets in both the cases, showing Tarique and 11 others fugitives.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Zahurul Hoque issued arrest warrants on July 14 against the 12, including Tarique and Harris, in the August 21 grenade attack case filed under the explosive substances act.
