CU proctors say they've quit
The proctor and three assistant proctors of Chittagong University yesterday said they resigned from their positions following misbehaviour by the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
The proctors, however, did not tender their resignation letters to the authorised person, Prof Dr Mohammad Shafiul Alam, acting registrar of the university. Prof Alam said he did not receive any resignation letters and did not hear that the proctors quit.
Sources said BCL activists led by Rakib Hossain and Fazle Rabbi Sujon went to the proctor's office and demanded withdrawal of an arms case filed against them. The BCL men also uttered "offensive and threatening words'' while talking to the proctors, they said.
Immediately after the incident, Proctor Dr Mohammad Akter Hossain and assistant proctors Mohammad Monjur Morshed, Mohammad Mainul Islam, and Shipok Krishna Devnath left resignation letters at the proctor office.
Mainul Islam and Shipok Krishna said Fazle Rabbi, who was expelled for one year in April 2010, pressed the proctor for permission to sit examination along with some BCL activists and used threatening words.
Fazle Rabbi, however, denied the allegation, saying he just requested the proctor to give him permission to sit for the examination.
The proctor could not be contacted as his mobile phone was switched off.
Fazle Rabbi, a third year student of finance and banking, was sued along with six others with Hathazari Police Station last year.
