A Dhaka court yesterday asked Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner to explain why police failed to produce seven prosecution witnesses (PWs) before it in the Ramna Batamul carnage case.
Police did not submit any report to the court on their failure to produce the witnesses.
The order came following an appeal submitted yesterday by SM Zahid Sardar, an additional public prosecutor.
Judge of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court also asked DMP boss to explain by September 4 why he failed to produce any witness before the court.
The same court asked the DMP commissioner on July 12 to produce seven witnesses, including a doctor and a magistrate, before it yesterday, but he failed to produce any of them to give their statements.
The court yesterday said if any negligence of police was found, they could not avoid their failure. So, police should have to be more alert with the court order in future as it is a sensational case.
Talking to The Daily Star Zahid said they tried their best for quick disposal of the case with sincerity but their attempts failed due to negligence of police.
Police failed to produce any witness before it for the last 14 months, even though it issued repeated summons asking them to produce witnesses, Zahid added.
The court directed director general (DG) of health to produce Dr Nurul Islam of forensic department of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital before the court on the scheduled date. It ordered the establishment ministry to produce former metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Emran Hossain.
