Criminal murdered in Sonargaon
A "listed criminal" was hacked to death by "his rivals" over land disputes at Jainapur village in Sonargaon upazila Monday night.
Police and locals said the deceased, Kabir Hossain, 33, of Habibpur village of the same upazila, had a previous enmity with Hasnat Mia of Jainapur over a land dispute for long.
Around 8:00pm on Monday, Kabir and Hasnat engaged in an altercation near the latter's house in Jainapur village centring the dispute, and Kabir went missing afterwards.
Around 12:00am, locals found the body of Kabir behind Jainapur Union Parishad office, which is adjacent to the house of Hasnat. Police sent the body to Dhaka Medical College morgue.
Yunus Ali, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station, said Kabir was a listed criminal in the police station and accused in several cases. They were investigating the killing, he said.
Sonargaon Sub-inspector Mejbah Uddin said they arrested a man for interrogation in connection with the murder of Kabir.
Kabir's family, however, did not file any complaint till yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, supporters of Kabir set fire to Hasnat's house and looted valuables, but Hasnat with his family escaped. Two living rooms of the house were burnt to ashes in the fire.
