Necessity of paramedics stressed

Speakers at a consultation have stressed the necessity of community paramedics (CP) at grassroots levels, as there is an acute shortage of human resources in the public health service at union level and below, says a press release. Although non-government organisations (NGOs) and the private sector are trying to fulfil this gap, there are no government cadre paramedics, they said, addressing the meeting at a city convention centre on July 26. TARSAN-CSO, a European Union funded healthcare project, organised the programme to provide a platform for open discussion regarding the facts and challenges of CP training course in Bangladesh. The government approved a CP course guideline and curriculum outline in late 2009 for a two-year CP course for the private sector. TARSAN-CSO Project Manager Dr Jafar Ahmad Hakim, Babul Chandra Roy of NIPORT, Dr Abdul Jabbar Mallick of SMF, Dr Ishrat Jahan of DGFP, Dr Md Habibur Rahman of DGHS, Md Mahbubur Rahman of NIPORT, and Dr Naryanadranath Dewri of BMA were present at the meeting among others.
