The main opposition BNP staged demonstrations across the country yesterday protesting the attack on the motorcade of party's acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Laxmipur on Monday. The party leaders alleged that the government wants to hide the incident by describing it as “stage-managed” but people would not accept this. “As part of the plan, a premeditated attack was launched on the motorcade,” said Nazrul Islam Khan, member of BNP standing committee, while addressing a protest rally in front of BNP central office at Naya Paltan in the city. Fakhrul's motorcade was attacked when he was going to the house of a local lawmaker after attending a council of the party's district unit at a community centre in the town. Fakhrul escaped unharmed but 10 others received minor injuries. Nazrul said the government has no tolerance for opposition parties and is hatching a “suppressive conspiracy” to destroy them. “Government did not believe in democracy. Now they do not want to allow the opposition party's secretary general to hold a protest rally,” he said, asking the government to take action against the attackers. BNP accused Laxmipur municipality Mayor Abu Taher, also an Awami League (AL) leader, and his followers for the attack but AL leaders said the incident was staged by BNP men. Nazrul also criticised the government in failing to control price hike of essentials, reducing power shortages and improving the law and order situation during the holy month of Ramadan. After the rally, BNP leaders and workers brought out a procession which ended at Bijoynagar.
