Deadlock prevails over proctors' resignation at CU
The resignation of the proctor and three assistant proctors of Chittagong University remained unsettled till yesterday as their talks with the vice-chancellor led to no conclusion.
VC Prof Md Anwarul Azim Arif sat with the proctors after they submitted resignation letters at his office yesterday noon, said Acting Registrar Prof Dr Mohammad Shafiul Alam. The deliberations of the meeting, however, remained inconclusive, he added.
"We found the resignation letters today (Wednesday)", Prof Shafiul said, adding that the matter of the proctors' resignation was now under discussion.
Offended by the misconduct of the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Tuesday, Proctor Akter Hossain and assistant proctors Monjur Morshed, Mainul Islam, and Shipok Krishna Devnath said they quit and left their resignation letters at the proctor's office the same day.
The acting registrar said a few leaders and activists of CU BCL led by its general secretary MA Khaled Chowdhury were present during yesterday's meeting and begged pardon.
Contacted, Proctor Dr Hossain said he will not nudge from his decision. “I took the decision of quitting the proctorship to save my honour and dignity as a teacher”, he said.
The three assistant proctors, however, did not make any comments over their resignations.
The VC could not be connected as his cell phone was switched off.
A group of activists of BCL, a pro-Awami League student body, led by Rakib Hossain and Fazle Rabbi Sujon went to the proctor's office Tuesday and asked the proctor to withdraw an arms case filed against them.
They also pressed the proctor for allowing Fazle Rabbi, a BCL man expelled for one year in April 30 by the university authority, to sit for examinations.
The BCL men also misbehaved with the proctor during talking.
