Shipping Minister Shahjahan Kahn said opposition leader Khaleda Zia's eldest son Tarique Rahman had deposited thousands of crores of taka to foreign banks by selling electric poles at higher prices during the previous BNP-Jamaat regime. "Awami League government had been able to produce 1600MW electricity during its 1996-01 tenure, while the BNP-Jamaat alliance just installed electric poles instead of producing power only to sell those at higher prices," he said. The shipping minister was inaugurating the new connection of the Rural Electrification Board (REB) at Purbaraghurampur village under sadar upazila in the district on Friday. He said the current power shortage was the creation of the previous BNP-Jamaat alliance government and not of the present government. "We have already taken 37 projects in the power sector and more will come up next to mitigate power crisis in the country," he said. The minister said the present government is the first ever in the country to reach the production target of 5,000MW power. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ishrat Jahan and Director of Rural Electrification Board Abdul Khaleq also spoke on the occasion.
