Female Domestic Help Beaten

Cops refuse to record case

Police refused to register a case against a flat owner of the city's Gulshan area who allegedly beat a female domestic help of a neighbouring flat on the same building five days ago. The victim Hasna Begum, 18, is undergoing treatment at One Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Hasna and another domestic help often went to the roof of the building on Road #113 to chat. The torturer Shafiqul Alam, around 35, living on the floor below, did not like people coming to the roof and beat Hasna with a rolling pin on August 2 for doing so, said Hasna. Hasna's employer admitted her to OCC on August 3. OCC authorities sent her to Gulshan Police Station the next day to lodge a case. But police recorded a general diary (GD). Officer-in-Charge Md Shah Alam of Gulshan Police Station yesterday said it was an incident of mild slapping which does not deserve to be lodged as a case. OCC Coordinator Dr Bilkis Begum said Hasna's body bore several marks of injury. When contacted over phone yesterday, Shafiqul denied the allegation.
