Staff Correspondent
The High Court yesterday directed the police to arrest four more people who were allegedly involved in torture on two women at an arbitration in Rangpur. The four are -- Enamul, Mohibul, Poba and Bablu of Kashiganj village in Rangpur. Police earlier arrested nine people in this connection. On June 26, Hafiza Begum Happy and her sister Saheda Begum were severely beaten by some villagers led by local Awami League and BNP leaders at Kashiganj in presence of Madhupur union Chairman Aynal Haque. The arbitration took place a day after Hashem Ali, husband of Happy, committed suicide following an altercation with Happy over his participation in campaign of the recently concluded UP election. The arbitrators punished Happy on the grounds that her husband committed suicide failing to endure the torment she inflicted on him. Saheda was punished for “instigating” the altercation. The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore passed the order after hearing statements of the two sisters. Officer in charge of Baderganj Police Station Tobarok Hossain produced them before the bench yesterday as per its order. The HC ordered the OC to produce the photos of Enamul, Mohibul, Poba and Babul to the trial court. Mahmuda Begum, Baderganj upazila officer of woman affairs department, lodged a case accusing 17 villagers who allegedly led the arbitration.
