Ensure proper use of power, gas
PM urges all
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged all to ensure proper utilisation of electricity and gas, considering those as valuable national resources.
In a massage on the eve of the National Energy Security Day 2011, the premier expressed her optimism saying that celebration of the day would play an important role in creating mass awareness on energy security.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had brought five gas fields under state ownership from foreign companies on August 9, 1975, she said.
"The day will be observed as the National Energy Security Day to make the historic steps of Bangabandhu memorable," Hasina said.
The premier also said the government is continuing its endeavour to increase production of gas through exploring and extracting gas from new gas fields.
Initiatives have been taken to extract 290 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas by this year, 495 mmcf by 2012 and 500 mmcf by 2013 under short, medium and quick schemes, she said.
"We have so far added around 2,000 megawatt of power to the national grid," Hasina said.
The premier wished success of all programmes of the day.
