The Supreme Court yesterday directed two accused, who were earlier acquitted by the High Court, to surrender before a lower court to face the trial of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Kazi Aref Ahmed murder case. Accused Sahir Uddin and Rafat alias Rafa will have to surrender before the Kushtia Sessions Judge's Court within six weeks, as per the SC order. Earlier in 2004, Sahir got death sentence and Rafa got life term imprisonment from the trial court in this case, but the HC acquitted them in 2008. The Appellate Division yesterday passed the order after granting a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the government against a portion of the HC verdict that acquitted the two accused. Kazi Aref, a Liberation War organiser, along with four Kushtia unit JSD leaders was killed at a rally in Kalidaspur village of Daulatpur upazila on February 16, 1999. He was sprayed with bullets when he was leaving the rostrum after delivering a speech against political violence. The four other leaders-- Kushtia district unit JSD president Lokman Hossain, general secretary Yakub Ali and activists Israil Hossain and Shamser Mandal-- died as they tried to save the valiant freedom fighter.
