Take local fruits to be healthy

Suggests Dr Bidhan

A horticulturist yesterday suggested adult people to consume a minimum of 125 grams of local fruits everyday instead of foreign fruits to save money and remain healthy. "Local fruits are cheap and found in abundance between May and September. So the people should consume at least 125 grams of fruit everyday to supplement the main food and create higher body resistance to diseases," Dr Bidhan Chandra Howlader, also a professor at Dinapur Haji Danesh Science and Technology University told the news agency yesterday. Dr Bidhan says the country has been running in a wrong direction as successive governments campaigned for plantation of trees for timbers and shades, but seldom they had looked into other aspects of plantation- food and nutrition from fruit-bearing trees. According to the national average, the horticulturist says, people consume only 40 grams of fruits everyday against the minimum requirement of 125 grams. He also pleaded for conducting more research and finding ways to grow enough fruits round the year to make local varieties available everyday in the market.
