BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday alleged that the government has not repaired any roads or highways across the county in the last two and half years causing immense sufferings to the people. “People are suffering as roads and highways have become almost unusable. But the communication ministry remains silent about the matter,” he said at a discussion meeting organised by Tejgaon Quran Shikkha Mission at Tejkunipara in the city. He pointed out that busy highways like the Dhaka-Mymensingh or Dhaka-Tangail roads are in the worst possible condition due to lack of repairs and proper maintenance works. “There are allegations of corruption in the repairing works of Dhaka-Mymensingh road. Crores of taka has been looted but ministry sits idle,” he said, asking the government to take immediate steps to repair roads and highways. The BNP leader also demanded withdrawal of cases filed against chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman. “The government is harassing the opposition leaders and workers by filing one case after another against them,” he said urging the government to stop repression against the opposition party. Party leaders Selima Rahman, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury and Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, among others, also spoke at the meeting where Barkat Ullah Bulu, chief adviser of the mission, was in chair.
