Bangabandhu would never have approved it

Nur Jahan, Chittagong
When people came to know of the government's plan to set up a nuclear power plant, they protested vehemently and urged the government to refrain from this suicidal step because it may not be guaranteed one hundred percent safe and if something goes wrong it would be disastrous. We know what a havoc had been wrought in Russia and Japan by the accident in nuclear power plants, our country would be more prone to such accidents because our maintenance is very poor. Conscious citizens were vocal about this proposed power plant, trying to dissuade the government from implementing it. We thought that the government will listen to the people but it was a rude shock when we learned from the media that the cabinet on August 1, 2011 approved a proposal for signing a cooperation treaty with Russian government for construction of Rooppur nuclear power plant. Prime Minister's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad told reporters that the initiative was originally taken by the country's founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But the accident at Chernobyl in Russia and the Fukshima in Japan happened in 1986 and 2011 respectively. If he was alive today, he would never have allowed to risk the lives of 16 crore people of Bangladesh by installing nuclear power plants. Therefore, we request Prime Minister not to go ahead with the plan which her father would have abandoned. We hope she will act wisely.
