Eviction of hawkers

“No eviction of hawkers from Dhaka city during the holy month of Ramadan”, said our communications minister. From his speech we may assume that after Ramadan there will be no hawker in Dhaka City. Hawkers have grabbed not only footpaths, they have also grabbed some portion of roads, and day by day they are grabbing more areas. Another dangerous thing is, recently I noticed poor people built slums on footpaths in Banani, Kamalapur and Khilgaon area. It seems city authorities did not notice it. In Dhaka people walk to short distance destinations without using rickshaws or any other vehicles, but they cannot walk due to shops/garages/car parkings on footpaths. If the footpaths are freed from hawkers, common people will use footpath and traffic jam will also reduce substantially. Our communications minister showed sympathy to the hawkers in this month of Ramadan. But I request the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to evict all hawkers from the footpaths of Dhaka immediately after Eid holidays.
