Of the 15 activists of banned Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir arrested from a procession in the city on Saturday, at least 10 are the students of different educational institutions. Meanwhile, a Dhaka court yesterday sent the 15 detainees to jail after police produced them before it seeking a 10-day remand prayer for each. Earlier the court fixed August 21 for hearing after the defence lawyers submitted applications seeking adjournment of the remand hearing. In the prayer, the defence lawyers said they are yet to collect necessary documents of their clients. So, they sought adjournment of the remand hearing. According to Paltan police, detained Radi Shafiq, Jamil Ur Rahman, Sabbir Ahmed alias Akash are the students of the Institute of Business Administration and A M Sayedul Islam of mathematics department of Dhaka University. Syed Jaim Abdullah is a student of a private university, Ashiqur Rahman of North South University, Safayet Ullah Shaon of Dhaka City College, Habibur Rahman of Tejgaon College and Sharif Shah Miraj of Government Science College. Manirul Islam alias Piyas, Asif Rahman and Mohammad Faysal are former students of Udayan College, Dhaka College and Dhaka Polytechnic Institute respectively while Ahmed Nizam is an employee of a private firm. The details of two others -- Mohammad Shahabuddin and Kader Jamil Khandker --could not be known immediately. Paltan police on Saturday filed two separate cases -- one under Anti-terrorist Act-2009 and another for police assault -- against them. However, family members of two detainees claimed that they were innocent and they were not involved with the banned organisation. Masum Parvez, brother of detained Sharif Shah Miraj said police picked Sharif when he was returning from the Dhaka Education Board at Bakshibazar while Hasibul Hasan, brother of Ahmed Nizam, claimed police mistakenly arrested his brother. But investigation officer of the cases, Sub-inspector Kamrul Faruk of Paltan Police Station ruled out their claims saying police arrested them from the procession. The government banned Hizb ut-Tahrir on October 22, 2009 citing it had been carrying out subversive and anti-democratic activities in the country.
