Combat road accidents

Cultural activists urge govt
Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Different cultural activists yesterday urged the government to stop anarchy and mismanagement centring roads and highways to stop deaths in road accidents. They also expressed concerns over increasing number of road accidents across the country and demanded exemplary punishment to the people responsible for such incidents. Pointing out the newspapers' reports, they said Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier's death was not an accident but it was a killing on the road. Four organisations--Udichi, Proma, Charon, Chattagram Theatre--arranged the rally at the city's central Shahid Minar with a message “We are grief-stricken and aggrieved.” They said the death figures on roads show that no man is safe on roads and highways due to reckless driving and dilapidated condition of roads. Speakers also urged the government to take necessary steps to take painter Dhali Al Mamun to abroad for his better treatment. Bodhon, Chhatra Union, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Chittagong Film Centre (CFC) also expressed solidarity at the rally. Later, a procession from Shihid Minar paraded important thoroughfares of the city and ended at Chittagong Press Club.
