New UNFPA boss arrives in Dhaka today

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director and UN Under-Secretary-General Dr Babatunde Osotimehin arrives in Dhaka today on a three-day official visit to Bangladesh, says a press release. During his stay on August 17-19, he will update himself about the maternal health situation in Bangladesh in the context of the Secretary-General's Global Strategy on women's and children's health. This is Osotimehin's first visit to Bangladesh after his appointment as the UNFPA executive director this January. Dr Osotimehin will call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, and Foreign Minister Dipu Moni. He is also expected to have a consultative meeting with civil society, UN or development partners, and the media to share views on the progress towards MDG 5 -- improve maternal health. Also a former health minister of Nigeria and former director general of Nigeria's National Agency for the control of AIDS, Dr Osotimehin, will make a joint field visit to Moulvibazar district with the health minister to observe maternal health related interventions.
