Family members, colleagues, and students of late Dr Mridul Kanti Chakrabarty, a teacher of Dhaka University, demanded investigation into the alleged negligence of his treatment at LabAid Hospital in the city. Dr Kanti, a noted musician and professor of music department, was rushed to LabAid Hospital with dehydration on Monday. He died there before having proper treatment. Asked, Maj (retd) Dr AKM Mahabubul Haque, one of the directors of the hospital, admitted that the treatment of the patient was delayed due to hospital procedure. But he denied the allegation of negligence by doctors. Dr Haque, however, said the hospital authority formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Dr Sirajul Haque, chief consultant of neurology department of the hospital. "We always do investigation if there is any allegation of negligence", he said. Dr Monjur Rahman Galib, a senior consultant of medicine department of LabAid Hospital, who attended Mridul Kanti told The Daily Star that he was busy attending another patient at his LabAid chamber. "I was not properly informed about the condition of the patient and delayed for 10 minutes. I was told that he was a diarrhoea patient. But I found him having chest pain, and he died within few minutes", he said. Dr Monjur said he examined Kanti's medical history and later learned that the patient died as the level of potassium in his body had increased due to blood anomalies triggered by diarrhoea. Nirjhor Bhattacharya, a nephew of Mridul Kanti, said his cremation was held at his ancestral village in Sunamganj yesterday evening. After paying him homage on the university campus, the students of the Department of Music brought out a procession demanding punishment to the responsible doctors. Karmajibi Nari, a rights body, also condemned the negligence.
