Students and teachers of Dhaka University yesterday demanded the Labaid Cardiac Hospital authorities give Tk 50 lakh as compensation to the family of Dr Mridul Kanti Chakrabarty, as, they allege, the DU teacher died due to doctor's negligence and wrong treatment. Labiad spokesman Kamal Najmus Salehin said the hospital authority will take 72 hours more to take any decision regarding this matter. Dr Mridul Kanti, a professor of the Department of Music of DU, was rushed to the hospital with dehydration on Monday. He died there before having proper treatment. Meanwhile, a meeting among the DU vice-chancellor, teachers, students, and representatives from Labaid Cardiac Hospital was held at the VC's office yesterday noon. VC Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said the Labaid authorities hinted to give compensation. "They (hospital authority) will hold a meeting among themselves and will inform us of their decision", he said. Prof Arefin said, "There is no doubt that Prof Mridul was victim of their negligence". The Labaid authorities have formed a 7-member investigation committee to look into the alleged negligence, he said. At a press conference at Madhur Canteen, students and colleagues of Mridul also threatened with tougher movement including laying siege to the hospital if their demands are not met. The demands include, giving the compensation, revealing the probe report within next 48 hours, suspending the responsible doctors, and begging pardon for their negligence. Earlier in the morning, the students and teachers from different departments of the university staged a protest rally in front of the Arts Building and submitted a memorandum to the VC. They urged the government to immediately take effective measures to stop business in the name of providing healthcare in private hospitals.
