Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta yesterday urged the government to amend the vested property act and establish minority communities' rights to property. Critical of the government's role, he said it has included many "trash things" in the constitution through the recent amendment, but failed to amend the vested property act during its 33-month tenure. Suranjit, chairman of the parliamentary body on the law ministry, was addressing as the chief guest the inauguration programme of Janmashtami Maha Shobha Jatra (grand procession) and a five-day religious festival of the Hindus. Janmashtami Udjapan Parishad Bangladesh arranged the programme at Anderkilla intersection in the port city yesterday, marking the birth anniversary of Lord Sri Krishna. Sukumar Chowdhury, president of the parishad, chaired the programme where former Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Swami Sureshwarananda were present as the special guests. Later, thousands of Hindu devotees from all ages took part in a grand procession in observance of the historic day. The procession was brought out from JM Sen Hall premises and ended at the DC Hill. Advocate Tapan Kanti Das, secretary of Janmashtami Udjapan Parishad Bangladesh, said 90 Hindu religious institutes took part in the procession. “A five-day long festival, from August 19 to 23, has been arranged including discussion, cultural programmes, and other religious events to mark the day”, he said. “According to Hindu calendar, August 21 this year is the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. But the parishad began their celebration two days earlier as the day is also the seventh anniversary of the brutal grenade attack on an Awami League rally", he added.
