8 injured in BGB- smugglers clash
At least 8 people including a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member of Joypurhat were wounded in a half-hour chase and counter-chase between alleged smugglers and BGB members at Joypurhat Railway Station yesterday.
Two of the wounded could be identified as Mohammad Ali Jinnah, a local resident, and Mahbubur Alam, a BGB member of Joypurhat-3 Battalion.
Lt Colonel Mehedi, commanding officer of the battalion, said they raided Khulna bound Rocket Mail train at the railway station around 12:30pm on information that the banned drug Phensidyle, usually found bottled, was being carried on containers.
When they went to cut open a water tank of one compartment, the stationmaster and some smugglers in the guise of passengers locked in an altercation with them leading to the clash, he said.
Even the Government Railway Police did not cooperate and so a huge quantity of the drug could not be recovered, he added.
The acting Stationmaster Md Abdul Hamid said the BGB members tried to forcibly cut open the tank despite protests from the station authority and passengers, which led to the clash.
