A truck driver has allegedly fled with 16 tonnes of sugar worth Tk 10.24 lakh on the way to Comilla from Chittagong. Sajib Mia, the driver, started for Comilla with 320 sacks of sugar from Sagarika area of the port city around 9:00pm on Tuesday, according to a general diary filed by Bijan Kumar, owner of Ghosh Transport that entrusted the consignment to Sajib. When he called Sajib over his cell phone around 11:00am the next day, he reported a tyre failure. "We tried to contact him again after an hour but his phone was switched off," Bijan said in the GD filed with Pahartali Police Station. The truck was hired from MSS Transport at Kadamtali in the port city. Rabi Chakrabarty, owner of MSS Transport, said Sajib hailed from Chandina of Comilla and has been driving for his company for five years. "We did not find Sajib at his home. His father said he knew nothing about his whereabouts", Rabi told The Daily Star. Babul Chandra Banik, officer-in-charge of Pahartali Police Station, said they are investigating whether the driver himself is the thief or a victim of theft. Haripada Saha, owner of Lakshmi Bhandar of Companiganj Bazar in Comilla, bought the sugar from Khatunganj wholesale market in the port city.
