New machine to end vote rigging

Staff Correspondent
A new machine to cast and count votes was presented in the city yesterday, claiming to end the debate over vote rigging and result manipulation. The electronic Vote Cast and Counting (VCC) machine has no software like in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and so there is no fear of software manipulation, said the machine's inventor Engineer MA Majid. Election Commission is planning to use EVM in the next parliamentary election. Majid, a member of IDEB, was speaking at a press conference at Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) conference room while presenting different features of the machine. Its operating system was created in such a way so that rural people can easily understand it and the machine can be made from locally available materials. "But the parts of the EVM will have to be imported," he said. Majid claimed each of his machines would cost Tk 8,500 to make, while each EVM would cost Tk 47,500. Replying to a question, Majid said, "I presented the machine to the election commission in 2007 after inventing it for the first time in Bangladesh. But they (election commission) did not respond for reasons unknown." The commission is scheduled to sit with him today to discuss about the machine, said Majid. IDEB Executive Committee President AKMA Hamid and General Secretary Shamsur Rahman were present at the press conference.
