2007 Campus Violence

'Withdraw case against RU students'

RU Correspondent
Teachers and students of Rajshahi University yesterday called upon the government and the authorities concerned to withdraw the case filed against 13 students of the university over the 2007 campus violence. Around 200 teachers and students of different departments made the call from a human chain organised by Kendrio Sangskritik Jote. On August 22, 2007, violence flared up on RU campus as law enforcers assaulted the RU students who were protesting army men's torture on three students of Dhaka University two days ago (August 20). The then acting registrar of RU, Prof Muhammad Shafi, sued 13 students named and 500 others unnamed on August 23 for their alleged involvement in the violence. Speakers at the human chain said all the cases filed against the teachers and students of DU over the August 20-22 unrest have already been withdrawn, but case is still hanging over the RU students. Amanullah Sarker Roni, an accused of the RU violence case, said, “We (victim students) are facing a lot of problem in academic and career life due to the false case”. On August 20, 2007, violence began on DU campus when some army men beat up three students and insulted a teacher of the university following scuffle during a football match. The incident of torture triggered waves of protest at the educational institutions across the country.
