Tougher rules for auto workshops

Photo: STAR
A few months ago news entitled “Tougher rules for auto workshops” was published in The Daily Star with photographs of New Eskaton and Gopibagh area. Whenever I read about tougher rules or tougher action in the newspapers, I laugh as we do not see any such rules/action in practice. What do tougher rules or action mean? Although amendment of Motor Vehicles Rules, 1984 came into force on March 02, 2011 restricting their operation in residential areas occupying roads and footpaths, we do not see implementation of motor vehicles rules even after four months of gazette notification. Auto workshop owners are carrying out their operation in residential areas causing sufferings to the residents and pedestrians. Most of the workshop owners are not aware about the new rules. I request the authorities to distribute leaflets among the workshop owners advising them to remove their workshops from the residential areas within a stipulated time. Tougher action must be taken immediately after the expiry of the stipulated time against the owners who will fail to remove their workshops within that time. Sincerity of the government, law enforcing agencies and local authorities is very important to implement any rules/orders of the government.
