Revive martyred human dignity

Saleh Ayub, On e-mail
As we moved into a new apartment after coming back to Houston from Dhaka, it became necessary to update our IDs. Accordingly, we went to the DPS office on August 18, 2011 to get the job. There was a big crowd at the DPS Office, after about a few hours our turn came and as I approached the person at the window/ station inquired about my welfare asking: "how are you doing, sir"? I said, "Good", and then the lady said, "What can I do for you?" I was amazed. I am an alien resident in Houston, and this is how I was addressed by a government official. Can anyone cite one single example like this in Bangladesh? The government officials back at home treat people like gutter snipes as if they are a parasite, absolutely forgetting that they themselves are the parasites living on the taxpayers' money. The Human dignity has been martyred with the emergence of independent Bangladesh. The government and its administrative machinery think that the people of the country are all subservient to them, which is a 'colonial mentality.' In the recent past the Honourable Prime Minister has proclaimed that she is the best patriot to be found in Bangladesh. Welcoming her bold statement, through these columns I would like to request her, as the chief executive of the country, to set a tradition for others to follow, in a bid to revive the martyred human dignity, for which she may remain immortal forever in the hearts and minds of the people.
