Speakers urge govt

Speakers at a commemorative rally here yesterday urged the government to renovate the roads and highways to ease the transportation suffering for home-going people before the Eid-ul-Fitr. “We want safe life. We do not want to lose more Mishuks or Tareques”, they said, addressing the rally organised in memory of acclaimed filmmaker Tareque Masud and broadcast journalist Ashfaque Munier Mishuk who died along with three others in a road crash in Manikganj on August 13. The speakers said the dilapidated roads not only escalated suffering of commuters and are killing valuable time, but they turned into death traps. The government should not to allow any license to illiterate and unskilled drivers so that no more loss of lives is seen in road accident, they urged. The speakers also demanded formulation of a proper law to stop plying of vehicles without fitness licence and punish the reckless drivers. Yesterday's rally, which followed a human chain arranged by socio-cultural organisation, Shishuder Pathshala, was held on Chittagong Press Club premises. Shuklal Das, director of Shishuder Pathshala, presided over the rally where Prof Jamal Nazrul Islam was present as the chief guest. Prof Ruhul Amin, president of Teacher's Association of Chittagong University (CU), its Secretary Prof Sekandar Chowdhury, Acting Registrar of CU Dr Shafiul Alam, and Chittagong Union of Journalists Secretary Nazimuddin Syamal also spoke at the programme.
