Valuables worth Tk 50 lakh seized, five arrested

Detective police recovered looted garment wears worth around Tk 50 lakh and a black-stone statue in separate drives in and outside the city on Sunday and arrested five people in these connections. Assistant Commissioner Obaidul Haque of Detective Branch (DB) of Police said, acting on a tip off, they arrested four people from Shantinagar and Kanchpur Bridge area around 2:00pm Sunday. Later, DB police recovered 468 cartons of garment wears from an abandoned warehouse near Meghna Bridge in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj with information from the arrestees, he said. On August 19, Sadma Fashion Wear Limited in Gazipur rented a van of Goodwill Cargo Service to carry their garments to the Chittagong Port. But the cargo van disappeared on the way with 514 cartons of wears, said Obaidul. The arrestees are members of the gang that looted the van, he added. Meanwhile, a DB team arrested an alledged smuggler Sirajul Islam, 42, from his residence in the city's New DOHS around 12:30pm Sunday. Police recovered an 80-kg black-stone statue from his house. He brought the statue from Dinajpur to sell, said Senior Assistant Commissioner of DB Ashiqur Rahman.
