Agitating workers of a garment factory in Gazipur barricaded Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for nearly three hours on Sunday morning demanding their wages, due for three months, and Eid bonus. The workers of East-West Factory at Hazirpukur area under sadar upazila of the district also vandalised and looted the factory, setting fire to clothes inside the factory and on the highway, said witnesses. On information, police rushed to the spot around 11:00am, removed the barricade and brought the situation under control. The factory authorities claimed that the agitation began when a worker was caught and beaten by a security guard while trying to steal a piece of cloth. The factory's Managing Director Harun-or-Rashid said the wages are not due and the workers are making false demands. The workers said the factory authority was supposed to pay their due wages on Sunday, but suddenly declared the day as a holiday.
