DU observes Black Day

Hundreds of Dhaka University (DU) students, teachers and employees yesterday observed the 4th anniversary of 'Black Day' recalling the inhuman oppressions on them by the military backed caretaker government on August 20 to 23 in 2007. They organised different programmes including wearing black badges, holding rally and discussion and postponing classes from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Speaking at the discussion, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique demanded immediate punishment of the culprits and said, "If the culprits get punishment, none will dare to commit such crime in future". He also said the government should disclose the names of those who were catalysts of the incident. DU authority organised the discussion at TSC auditorium where DU pro vice-chancellor Prof Dr Harun-or-Rashid, treasurer Prof Mizanur Rahman, president of Teachers' Association Prof Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Prof Dr Aktaruzzman spoke, among others, with DU VC in the chair. Earlier on August 20 in 2007, army personnel assaulted some students and their teachers in the university playground during a football match. Thousands of DU students on the same day took to the streets protesting the incident and demanded withdrawal of the on-campus army camp at DU gymnasium and an apology from the troops. The protest afterwards spread to all the educational institutions across the country. The then army-backed caretaker government imposed a curfew on the divisional cities and later arrested four DU teachers -- Prof Dr Anwar Hossain, Prof Dr Sadrul Amin, Prof Dr Harun-or-Rashid and Prof Dr Neem Chandra Bhowmick and several students. Military tortured them heavily during and after the incident.
