10 unions flooded as dyke collapses in Gaibandha
Fresh areas go under water in Netrakona

The flood control embankment along the river Karotoa collapsed at two points in Gobindagnaj upazila on Monday night, submerging ten unions of the upazila. The dyke collapsed due to heavy pressure of water in the river that was flowing ten centimetres above the danger mark on Monday evening. The affected unions are Mohimaganj, Shalmara, Kochashaher, Shibpur, Rakahal Buruj, Darbastha, Taluk Kanupur, Nakai, Gumaniganj and Kamardaha. A 400-metre stretch of the flood control embankment collapsed at Balua point in Mohimaganj Union while a 300-metre portion collapsed at Chandpur point in Sadar Union. At least 27,000 people have been marooned and over 300 thatched houses damaged in the flood-hit areas. According to upazila agriculture office, transplanted aman on 8,000 hectare of land, many aman seedbeds and vegetable gardens have gone under water. Communication with upazila headquarters has remained snapped since yesterday morning as all roads in the affected unions went under knee-deep water. Gobindagnaj Upazila Parishad Chairman Abul Kalam Azad said the marooned people need food, medicine and drinking water. He requested district and local administrations to provide food, drinking water and medicine for them. Deputy Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam, UNO Abdul Wahed and Executive Engineer of WDB Mir Mosharraf Hossain yesterday visited the affected areas and distributed dry food among the flood victims. Our Netrakona correspondent reported that with inundation of fresh areas, flood situation in six upazilas of the district further worsened yesterday. The affected upazilas are Kalmakanda, Durgapur, Madan,Barhatta, Khaliajuri and Netrakona sadar upazila. Most of the areas of the upazilas are still under three to four feet water. Water Development Board (WDB) sources said Someshwari River devoured over 20 dwelling houses at Shibganj and 10 shops at Kamarkhali Bazar in Durgapur upazila while the Dhanu River engulfed at least 25 dwelling houses of Barantar in Khaliajuri upazila yesterday. The Someshwari, Kongsha, Mogra and Dhanu rivers were flowing above the danger levels at 6:00pm yesterday, sources added.
