Greenhouse gases are the components of the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect. The major greenhouse gases are- carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons etc. It is clear that the greenhouse effect is a great threat to the world. There are many environmental problems coming from the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in earth's atmosphere. The important feature of greenhouse gases is that they absorb certain infrared wavelengths. Thus, they trap heat in the troposphere and stop it from escaping to the space. The result of the heating of the earth's surface by this type of phenomenon is the greenhouse effect. And global warming may bring severe consequences for Bangladesh with the rise in sea level by up to one meter by the turn of the next century, and 10-17 percent of our total land area will be submerged. More than ten million people will be worst sufferer. Forest, agriculture, infrastructure, coastal aquaculture and flora and fauna would be severely damaged. The developed countries are the main contributors to greenhouse effect through their industrial activities from which huge quantities of these gases are released and we, people of the developing countries, suffer most. So, for the betterment of the earth, we should take some steps to minimise the greenhouse effect like reduction in the use of fossil fuels, extensive forestation, conservation of forest, reduction in the use of automobiles, ban on CFCs & nuclear plants. Therefore, we should come together to save our environment by reducing the harmful green house gases for our own good.
