Here are some comments that came in response to Saturday's The Daily Star report headlined 'SC Lawyer Ahmed dies'.

I am wondering why nobody is accusing Justice Manik for his role in this death. It is my opinion that he should be held responsible for this tragic death. SU Ahmed
It is so sad and unfortunate that no one is secure from torture in police custody. The situation is such that we are living in the jungle among ferocious animals. Yamin
The victim's offence is that he belongs to the rival political party. Such killings and brutal oppression of the political opponents have the nod from the highest seat of the government. The country is being led to anarchy by the ruling government. Jumana Sarwar
Bangladesh Police is working very hard to make themselves an object of distrust and resentment. They are worse than colonial police, arrogant, despotic, and continuously deny extra-judicial torture and killings. Amin
This is a murder by the police. Police are not law enforcing force now. There is no law in this country now except repression of opposition, ordinary people and plundering of peoples' property. We don't hold out much hope for the recovery of such state-terrorism. Shame! Shame! Shame! Shahidul Islam
This is a cold-blooded murder and full responsibility lies with the government, principally the Home minister, the Attorney General and the police. Under what law was he held in isolation without informing the Court for 5-6 days and tortured by police while in coronary discomfort, under whose order? Even after pick-up he was reportedly slapped and beaten in the police vehicle. Have we all turned inhuman? Manzoor Ashraf
What an unfortunate affair this will surely blacken the reputation of the Government just because certain members of the law enforcements are far too enthusiastic to please their masters within Government without observing rules and regulations which were there to protect the police reputation and safe guard the basic human rights of detainees. A judicial inquiry under senior justice of the Supreme Court is inevitably necessary. The fair investigation of his being tortured, of murder, regarding not reporting to the court, constant police guard at the hospital, on death bed statement to his wife is urgently required. Undue influence, dishonesty, political interference regarding this case will put the nation into seriously deep crisis. Tomal
This is one more indication of the violation of human rights, rule of law and justice. Tears of MU Ahmed's wife, relatives and innocent that he leaves; tears of Limon's and his parents; relatives of Nurul Islam and many others who are affected, suffered by the police, RAB and by the political decisions of this government might be more costly than anyone ever thinks. Monirul Islam, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of police, denied allegations of torturing Ahmed or giving him electric shocks. He said Ahmed was at the DB office no more than 40 minutes. He said following the arrest, Ahmed was taken to the DB office where he told them about pain in his chest. He claimed that Ahmed was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors said Ahmed suffered a heart attack and recommended he be moved to NICVD at once.
