BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the disclosure made by Wikileaks about the honesty of the communications minister is actually an international recognition of the government's corruption. “Information about the present government's corruption already reached international level. Even Canada started investigation into the corruption allegation centring the proposed Padma Bridge project,” he said at a programme in the city's Jaitya Press Club. Save Bangladesh Save Tarique Rahman, a pro-BNP organisation, organised the programme marking the third anniversary of Tarique's release from jail. Fakhrul also unveiled the cover of a book in the programme with Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Secretary General Shawkat Mahmud in the chair. According to cables leaked by whistleblower Wikileaks, former US ambassador in Dhaka James F Moriarty branded Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain as a “less than honest” man in his business dealings. The cables were released on August 30. The BNP leader said Tarique's presence is needed to protect the country from the existing crises. Countrymen will be able to build a modern Bangladesh under Tarique's leadership in the future, he said. Tarique, senior vice chairman of BNP, is now in the United Kingdom. He was released from jail on September 3, 2008 and left the country for the UK on September 11, 2008. He was arrested on March 7, 2007 on charge of corruption.
